The N2 East of Knysna was blocked on Wednesday night (10 July 2013) by protesters who apparently demanded electricity, following a power cut to the area. Angry protesters burned tyres into the night and allegedly threw bricks and stones at vehicles.
Police and the Knysna Municipality’s Law Enforcement team were dispersed. Traffic was still backed up at the time of this report (9PM). Gunshots were also reported by Look4it readers in the vicinity of Old Place. No injuries were reported.
The Knysna Municipality explained in a statement that repair was delayed and postponed until daylight due to a cable fault. This prompted protest action from the residents in Oupad and Bongani. A fire truck and two traffic vehicles were damaged in the process. The Municipality managed to successfully repair the cable fault by Thursday afternoon and electricity to the area was restored. The protest was described as “horrifying” by a Look4it Knysna Reader who was on her way to Plettenberg Bay. “You feel out of control and kept hostage in your car, not knowing if they will throw a brick through your window. I prayed a lot that night”.
